What does a week in kindergarten look like at home?

This is my very first week posting an update. This is not a rigid schedule timed down to the minute, per se.  I weave in music and movement, hands-on activities, read-a-louds, table time and playtime through out our days.

Update for the week of February 25th.

We begin each day with our Egermeier Bible Story Book and memory verse.  We are currently on a memory verse that coordinates with letter P.  Pray Continually. 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

In science, we are learning about Deserts, Grasslands, Rain forests, and Oceans. I had, previously, laminated these maps; using wet-erase markers we identified general areas these biomes are located and talked about why.  We listened to animal sounds on You Tube, we created cacti out of green play-doh and spaghetti noodles, and added varying amounts of sea salt to cups of water to taste. (We did reach a point where it was TOO salty to even sip, ha).  Our read-a-loud this week, Dolphin Adventure, in this true story we enjoyed the rescue of a baby dolphin.

In history, we are on week three learning about Ancient Greece.  This week we have learned the differences between the Greek city-states Athens and Sparta.  One specific detail that interested G was that Spartans drank pig blood and vinegar known as, Black broth, to toughen up their soldiers to conditions often faced in war.  We continued our Adventures in Ancient Greece read-a-loud and Story of the World audio for selected Greek chapters.  We, also, watched a short video on how the Greek city-state Olympia founded the Olympics and why.  You might find it interesting to learn about why the Olympics started, but, also, why they were halted until the 1800s.

Of course, some of our table time subjects include handwriting and math. G recently moved onto 1st grade math at the end of January.  We are working through a free online Spanish video course about 2x a week and he does a little handwriting practice each day.

In the photo below, G is working on his fluency sheet via whiteboard. He enjoys getting to cross words off or erase them.  E is quietly coloring her letter ‘E is for Elephant’.  She loves adding googly eyes to these animals (Some of them have entirely too many eyes, ha).IMG_7007

For Fun. Our Wednesday afternoon tradition is ‘Books N Cream’. We head over to the library to get our books and walk over to the local coffee shop that sells Mayfield ice cream for cheap!

I cannot possibly write e.v.e.r.y.s.i.n.g.l.e thing we have done this week into my updates, that would be very cumbersome.  I do hope this gives you an idea of how much we are learning each week!  I would love ideas to incorporate immediate family into our learning, I have some ideas up my sleeve, but please do let me know if you have an idea you would enjoy!
