Is it time to switch up your math curriculum?

and how to know when.

Two weeks into a familiar-to-us yet teacher-intensive program I knew it was time. From the beginning we had used this curriculum, it was familiar and well taught, over 6 years of use with multiple children.

So is it time for you to switch? Here might be some key signs.

  1. You find amidst the daily grind math is ‘slipping through the cracks’. For me that looked like my youngest children getting math done during our normal school hours and my oldest middle schooler needing my help late in the evening because I didn’t have time during the day to teach what he didn’t understand on his own.
  2. You are finally realizing (if you haven’t already) that you need help teaching your child math. For me this looked like needing to read the lesson thoroughly and sometimes still not understanding how to best teach the concept to a child. This took some humility on my part because I actually enjoy teaching math, it feels like a brain exercise everyday!
  3. You need someone else to grade your child’s math practice questions. For years I have graded daily e.v.e.r.y math problem my children have done on their own. This year I realized I just needed my middle schooler to have more independence and receive immediate feedback (not having to wait until after dinner to go over that day’s mistakes! eek.)

This definitely is not a definitive list, but I hope it helps!

We switched to Saxon and we are using Nicole the Math Lady! I haven’t been this impressed in years! highly recommend.
